Many people think their workplace is “a zoo,” but Janet’s really is. She has been Director of Public Relations at the Saint Louis Zoo for a total of 23 years. During her first tenure at the world-famous zoo, passage of the ZMD tax district saw big changes there – construction of Big Cat Country and major renovations of the Primate House, Bird House and Herpetarium. After leaving the Zoo during her children’s growing up years, she returned in 1991. Since then, she has seen the birth of a baby elephant named Raja and the subsequent birth of his baby girl, Maliha; the Zoo’s first capital campaign and the construction of the multi-species immersion exhibit River’s Edge, a new children’s zoo, an insectarium and butterfly wing, Penguin & Puffin Coast, a new cypress swamp in the 1904 Flight Cage and Fragile Forest for great apes. Janet continues her role of relating the Zoo’s story as it evolves into a 21st century zoo for the future. In 2004 the Zoo launched its WildCare Institute, which is working in 12 conservation hotspots around the globe. The Institute has gained attention from national and international media. It collaborates with numerous other zoos, universities and conservation organizations. St. Louisans have long considered their zoo to be tops in the nation. In 2005 that was confirmed when the Saint Louis Zoo was named America’s #1 zoo by Zagat Survey and Parenting Magazine. Janet has written two children’s books – “Raja Goes to School” and “Great Zoos of the United States: Saint Louis Zoo.”
